Zen entstand um das 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr. als Chan in China. Chan war stark von der taoistischen Kultur und den Yogapraktiken beeinflusst und entwickelte sich zu einer eigenen Tradition. Von China aus reiste Chan nach Vietnam, Korea und schließlich nach Japan. Auf Japanisch heißt Chan Zen. Die Abstammung ist in den Zen- und Chan-Traditionen sehr wichtig und die meisten Lehrer können ihre Abstammung auf Bodhidharma zurückführen.
Zen-Schüler verbringen Zeit im Sitzen mit Meditation, bekannt als Zazen. Lehren zu lesen und zu verstehen ist wunderbar, aber der Schwerpunkt dieser Tradition liegt auf der tatsächlichen Ausübung und Beobachtung von Geist und Erfahrung. Zazen beginnt normalerweise mit der Konzentration auf den Atem, und die Schüler gehen dann zum einfachen Sitzen über (bekannt als Shikantaza) und zum Koan-Lernen mit einem Zen-Lehrer.
Zen hat die Kunststile in Asien stark beeinflusst und ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten im Westen ziemlich in Mode gekommen. Prominente Zen-Lehrer sind Thich Nhat Hanh, Suzuki Roshi, Wu Bong und Jakusho Kwong Roshi.
